Key qualification meets gender and diversity

“Gender and diversity” was the focus of the annual meeting of the Baden-Württemberg Key Qualifications Forum (SQ) in March 2025.

The question was what role the topic of gender and diversity plays in the teaching of interdisciplinary skills (so-called key qualifications) at the nine universities in Baden-Württemberg. What do we mean when we talk about diversity? What added value does inclusion bring? How can we communicate (gender-)inclusively in teaching/learning settings? What does diversity-sensitive teaching mean and how can it be designed?

Our workshop with Jennifer J* Moos used expert input, practical exercises and case studies to sensitize us to gender, diversity and inclusion as a cross-sectional task in different work settings. We discussed the opportunities and challenges in teaching and learning contexts, such as language or examples in teaching materials. We also discussed how we can take gender and diversity even more into account in administrative tasks in the context of our course offerings.

There are courses on gender and diversity at all state universities. In addition, the University of Tübingen is the only state university to offer a certificate. It enables students to engage academically with gender and social diversity as interdisciplinary topics. As part of the certificate, students learn to reflect on and question seemingly self-evident processes of individual and social identification and to place them critically in a historical and social context. All information about the certificate can be found at: https://uni-tuebingen.de/de/267675

Both as the TRACS department and together with the SQ centers of the state universities, we will continue to work on this topic. Please contact us if you have any suggestions.
