Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology

Research structures

The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology is involved in the following research networks:

LEAD Graduate School & Research Network

LEAD stands for Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development. More than 100 scientists from various disciplines work together at LEAD on core issues of empirical educational research. The Hector Institute plays a leading role in this endeavour.

Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN)

Researchers from 25 institutions have joined forces to pool their expertise and increase the visibility of their research on educational issues among stakeholders in education policy and education administration as well as the general public.

Research Network "Working with Portfolios in Education"

The Research Network "Working with Portfolios in Education" aims to promote high-quality, cross-site research into portfolio work in order to create a systematic database for the further development of portfolios in an educational context.

National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)

Funding Programs of the Institute

The institute’s funding programs are available in English only. Hector Institute members can contact their respective advisors for more detailed information.

Exploratory Grants (EGs)

PurposeThese grants are intended to cover initial project expenses (e.g., pilot studies, experiments, or feasibility tests). They are designed to support the early exploration of research ideas, with the clear expectation that there is an obvious pathway to a publication in a high-
prestige journal and/or a subsequent application for larger, external funding (e.g., DFG) will follow. Typically, EGs can have a duration of up to 18 months.
Who can apply? All Institute's Research Staff

Teaching Replacement Grants (TRGs)

PurposeIn well-justified cases, funding is available for replacement teaching at the professorial
level that gives the applicant the time to work on a larger research
proposal.
Who can apply?Institute's professors and junior research group leaders

Hector Foundation Grants (HFGs)

PurposeThese grants support larger or more advanced research projects aligned with the Institute’s strategic priorities. HFGs aim to transform the institute’s interconnectedness and seek to increase the quality of its research. They intend to promote world-class research using innovative methodological approaches. Priority will be given to projects that connect at least two Research Hubs. HFGs can also be used to increase international collaborations, including the invitation of distinguished international professors or the recruitment ofinternationally co-sponsored PhD candidates. Typically, EGs can have a duration up to 3 years.
Who can apply? All Institute's professors and junior research group leaders as Principal Investigators (PIs); Postdoctoral scholars as PI if a professor is Co-PI; Collaborators from other institutes are welcome to contribute to the funding proposals but the money cannot be transferred to other universities.
